GFuserDB upgrade - Ideas

From: Ryan Dwyer | Posted: 20/07/2006 7:09:51 AM
The idea is that people fetch topics on their board and they're added automatically. The list is not compiled by a single person. But this means that anyone who's posted on the board can be added.
I will not use abbrev.

Yeah, I don't really see the harm in adding people who only post a few times on a particular board. The alternative would be to manually remove people, and then it becomes subjective in choosing who's "regular" and who's not, which sort of defeats the purpose of it all. Now, on boards like LUE, this wouldn't be a problem at all.

Also, this would be entirely and completely useless, but I'd be very curious as to how many times an individual user name has been fetched. I'd love to see what name comes up the most when fetching topics.

Okay...I finally have seen the light! <_< I understand what's being said now. I thought the idea was to manually create boardlists with users...but I understand now. (Took long enough :P)

On another note, I agree with Ed, though, it would be neat to see how many times a user has been fetched on a certain board.

Oh, that's an interesting idea by Ed. Everyone who has posted on the board and been fetched goes into the boarddb automatically, but then a tally is kept that bumps each time a name is re-fetched. That way you'd have the option of either viewing everyone who has ever posted on the board as the 'users' or sorting by fetch# and saying to yourself "only those with 10+ fetches are real members of the board."

Cool idea in theory, downside being that it's a ton of writing to the database... I say it's at least worth a shot, so we could see how much performance would suffer if we tried it. I'd only want it on the boarddbs though, doing that much writing for the whole site would be nutty.

The counting sounds like a bad idea. A single topic could just be fetched over and over. I don't think the point of this system should be to determine who is a "regular" of a board- frankly, that's impossible to compile with a simple system like this.

Well, would it be possible at all to only "count" individual topics once? That way, just fetching the same topic over and over again wouldn't skew the results.

But what about topics that grow quite large and have new users? A topic has 100 posts, so you fetch it and you nab 2 users. It grows to 500 but you aren't able to fetch it again (if I'm understanding this correctly).

Still, the idea really entertains me. I think the "total times fetched" idea would present problems, but a list of all the boards a user has been found at shouldn't cause as much trouble. It wouldn't really show the regulars (I can't think of a way to do this), but it would still be interesting. I love stats, so I'd get swept up in looking at insignificant things for hours. ^_^
